All You Need To Know About Gorilla Glass
All of you would have heard about Gorilla Glass in iphone 4,Galaxy tab and in many other electronic devices. It is actually athin, light, scratch resistant sheet of glass made up of alkali-aluminosilicate. It is basically used as the cover glass for portableelectronic devices such as mobile phones, tablet screens and inlaptop display screens. Gorilla Glass is developed by the companynamed ‘
Corning
’ which developed this product way back in1960’s under the name chemcor. This product withstood 100,000pound of pressure per square inch and has been used as bullet proof windshields and in spacecrafts.
How it all started:
Existence of this great product was an idea; given to BillArmistead by Bill Decker way back in 1960’s that why does glassbreaks? So they started working on a project named ‘ProjectMuscle’ with an aim of developing an ultrastrong and unbreakableglass. And this superstrong glass was namedChemcor. In the previous 10 yearsor so there was a sudden need for the replacement for the easilyscratchable plastic lens amongst the cell phone manufacturing
companies. As cell phone manufactures challenged Corning to finda glass to meet their specific product needs, Corning scientistslooked on their invention and innovation shelves, their eyes fallingon Chemcor – the chemically strengthened glass that was stillawaiting its perfect market niche. Naming the project GorillaGlass, the company’s project team worked to make a glass of proper thickness to serve a protective cover for the cell phonescreens.By the beginning of 2006, the project was on a full go. Its aim wasnot just cell phones, Corning aimed to overtake the use of plasticwhich is easily scratchable and soda-lime glass which can break easily in some of the products like, notebooks, GPS devices, portable music players, smart phones, etc. The team tried to make ahighly durable, scratch resistant Liquid Crystal Display cover glassfor better optical clarity and longer life.
What’s With the Name?
Its name came to be as Gorilla Glass, since Gorilla resembles abanana-eating, chest-beating, tree-swinging mammal known for itsferocious strength and stocky build. While Gorilla glass mirrors itsnamesake’s strength, it doesn’t have to be bulky to get the jobdone. Gorilla glass can be produced in the svelte thinness of lessthan one millimeter, according to the product team. It providesadded protection for personal electronic devices and is especiallyvaluable for those devices featuring touch-screen technologies.
